Find Your Power Animal

Find Your Power Animal

It has been our great pleasure to record with Find Your Power Animal. Below is a case study about our time in the studio with the band. We briefly explain each section of the project and how we achieved the finished recording. Finished EP Planning During the planning stage of the project we spoke to John, Sam and Chris from FYPA about what they wanted to achieve from their time in the studio. The band’s aim was to record three songs that would be added to two more songs at a later date to produce their first EP. We spoke about the different recording options that they had available while in the studio. FYPA wanted to produce an EP of high quality recordings while still keeping a feel of the bands punk rock performance. Recording Process All of the tracks where recorded in our Studio in Widnes (View studio detail here). The whole band performed the tracks together while we captured the drums and took guide tracks for the other instruments and vocals. We then recorded each instrument individually until we had captured the whole band. This technique allowed us to both capture the feel of a live performance whilst also providing the clarity of having multiple takes of each instrument. Photos from the studio Mixing Process Once we had completed the recording process, we created a rough mix of the recordings for the band to listen to. We worked with the band to complete the final tweaks in the mix and get all the tracks sounding exactly as they wanted them. With all three tracks, we needed to create the right balance of power and clarity. These tracks have not yet been mastered, once all of the tracks are recorded for the EP the band plan to get the whole EP mastered. Video taken by the band during the capture of the...

The Naughty Corner – Redemption – Album

The Naughty Corner – Redemption – Album

It has been our great pleasure to record the latest Naughty Corner album – Redemption. Below is a case study about our time in the studio with the band. We briefly explain each section of the project and how we achieved the finished recording. Finished Album   Planning During the planning stage of the album we spoke to Si Owens from The Naughty Corner about the different recording methods we could use in the recording studio. This is something that the band had already given a great deal of time considering and had already prepared a plan. It was not possible to get the whole band in the studio for a week to record their parts together. To solve this each musician would come to the studio on their own and record all of their parts for the album on that day. They would each record all of their parts to a pre-made backing/click track that would be mixed together at a later date. It’s fair to say this would be a challenging recording method for the musicians. We talked about this with the band but they where confident they would be able to pull this method of recording off. Recording Process The Album was recorded in our Studio in Widnes (View studio detail here). The recording was built from the bottom up. The instruments where recorded in the following order Drums, Bass, Keys, Guitars, Trumpet, Vocals.  Recording the instruments individually to a click track allowed us to keep a close eye on each players timing and performance. Each of the musicians where extremely talented and knew what they had to complete each day for the recording to stay on target. Below is the audio file we used as a backing track for the song Pigeons and the finished recording so you can compare the start to end product. Photos from the studio Mixing Process Once we had completed the recording process, we created a rough mix of the album for the band. We worked with the band to complete the final tweaks in the mix and get all the tracks sounding exactly is they wanted them. The aim while mixing the tracks was to create a commercial sound that would appeal to a wide audience.  With all of the tracks on the album we needed to create the right balance of power and clarity, we are very happy with the final mix of this interesting album and we  wish The Naughty Corner all the best. The Album has not been mastered so we decided to pre master the track to boost the levels of the...

MakoLive – Liverpool – 11/2/12- Mobile Recording

All acts get a free sample pack of the media that includes an audio tracks from their set. The whole set of media is available for purchase. Recording The desk at The Lomax has direct outs from each channel. We used these with our own mobile recording studio to multi track record each instrument from the artists live performance. Mixing Multi tracking the instruments aloud us to mix the music in a simular fashion to how we would a studio recording. We mixed each track in the style we felt best suited the artist. Stoneway – EP

Stoneway – EP

Above is the finished studio recording and mix of the track “Somewhere In This Life”, “We’re Really Moving” and “Free” by Stoneway. Planning During the planning stage we spoke to Stoneway about the different options that they had available while recording their EP, taking into consideration the pros and cons of each of these options. Stoneway decided to record their instruments individually to a click track. This option helps produce a steady recording and also gives us more options in the mixing stage. Recording Process The EP was recorded in our Studio in Widnes (View studio detail here). The recording was built from the bottom up. The instruments where recorded in the following order Drums, Bass, Guitars, Keys then Vocals.  Recording the instruments individually to a click track allowed us to keep a close eye on each players timing and performance. Mixing Process The aim while mixing these tracks was to create a commercial sound that would appeal to a wide audience. We created a big drum and vocal sound and everything else sat behind them. The most challenging part of mixing the EP was getting the levels right between multiple competing melodies. We arranged a post production meeting with Stoneway to decide which instruments should take lead at which point during all 3 tracks.   The EP has not being mastered so we decided to pre master the track to boost the levels of the...
